I am a Soft- and Hardware developer from Berlin in Germany with more than
ten years of experience. Equipped with practical knowledge in the areas of
systems and application programming, robotics, and computer-aided manufacturing.
During the last four years, I gave countless lectures and workshops on 3D
Printing, 3D or CAD modeling, and microcontroller programming. My personal
record is 100+ 3D Printer building classes which in its early state inspired
the development of the i3 Berlin.
So far my work allowed me to come across various aspects of product and service
design. If I would distil all of it down to the quintessence, I probably
end up with something like 'Simplicity is key'. But the moment that I came up
with this little insight, I needed to admit that 'Simplicity is difficult'.
I am well trained in operating various types of digital fabrication equipment,
in particular 3D Printers, Laser Cutters, and CNC Machines. More than handling
I have written software for most of these machines and I am very familiar with the
concepts and mechanisms that drive them.

This is the prototype of a machine that creates design tiles.
Third and currently last attempt for a generative design interface. This time i took everything I had learned from my last two attempts and made grasshopper plugin that renders a 3D model and streams it over web sockets to a browser.
My experiences with microcontrollers, sensors and actuators are diverse. I have been working with Atmel AVR, Texas Instruments msp430, NXP LPC and others. This image depicts a small prototype of an Arduino based dosing pump. It was part of a larger setup for a new manufacturing process for design tiles I helped to develop.
During the last 12 month, I spent my time inventing new ways for 3d food printing. While doing this, I gained very interesting insides on mass food manufacturing and the state of the art food ingredients technology. My personal impression could be phrased as "it is very technical, but it is still very much food". Also understanding the level of quality of our alimentation, here in the somewhat developed world. Drove me toward appreciating the work of people in that particular field way more than I did before.
The second attempt for a generative design interface made for MakerBot Europe. It is the ensemble of an ios app programmed in swift and a backend written in golang that renders 3D models with the help of the open source modeling software Blender. While the app has eventually the same functionality like the Vodaphone app, it is completely reworked behind the scenes. You could consider it the next version, of a concept endeavor into generative design.
This was a first attempt for a generative design interface, made for the Vodaphone booth at IFA 2013. And this is how it works, you start the app on your phone and record a sound. Then it would generate a design based on that audio recording. All the design information was encoded in java code inside the app.
I gave many 3D modeling classes, using a variety of different modeling programs, always with the focus on designing for 3D printing. Most of the time i am either using Blender, Rhino3D or Fusion 360.
As an early desktop 3D printing enthusiast, I helped to design and develop the i3 Berlin, it was a great experience. And while this was my first mayor hardware project I have learned a great deal out of it. For example, If you can avoid it, don't make your hardware consists of more than 300 parts.
The i3 Berlin building workshops where a great experience and told me a lot about how to observe the user and get valuable feedback. We gave more than 100 Workshops were participants did build a 3D printer from what was in the beginning merely spare parts.
